If you think you've never heard this classical Norwegian singer, dig into your CD collection and pull out the Titanic soundtrack. Alongside the Oscar-winning Celine Dion tune everyone remembers are tracks and tracks of Sissel's haunting, ethereal vocals illuminating the tragedy of the sinking liner. Over her varied 20-year career, she's sung for queens, princes, Winter Olympics, and Nobel Peace Prize ceremonies -- in addition to dates with Dion and Josh Groban, who in some ways could be considered her American male equivalent. While a brilliant singer of uncommon range and emotional depth, she may have a bit of trouble finding an easy niche because albums like Into Paradise are slightly all over the map. But that's not a bad thing for adventurous listeners who want to take the journey, which runs from Mozart to Bach, Puccini to (and you have to wait until track 12) ABBA ("Like an Angel Passing Through")! Then there are the Norse folk tales, which are obviously close to home. A lack of familiarity with some of the material, however, will help the listener focus on the purity of her voice. The one quality she possesses that some of her pop-classical counterparts don't is restraint, and the production is very focused on her voice rather than on booming production and powerhouse grooves (though she boasts punkers and rappers on her résumé). The collection was recorded in Norway with the internationally renowned Trondheim Soloists.

The solo piano recording was done at George Lucas Skywalker Sound Studios and I was blessed to work with producer Will Ackerman, Grammy Award winning Founder of Windham Hill Records. Enya (born Eithne Patricia Ní Bhraonáin on 17 May 1961, Gweedore, County Donegal, sometimes presented in the media as Enya Brennan) is an Irish singer, instrumentalist and composer. She began her musical career in 1980 when she briefly joined her family band Clannad, before leaving to pursue her solo career. Her album Watermark, which was released in 1988, propelled her to international recognition and Enya became known for her unusual sound, which was characterized by voice-layering, folk melodies, synthesized backdrops and ethereal reverberations.

She continued to enjoy steady success during the 1990s, while her 2000 album A Day Without Rain achieved tremendous record sales (15 million) and she was named the World's biggest selling female artist of 2001. She is Ireland's best-selling solo artist and is officially the country's second biggest musical export, after the band U2, her record sales stand at 75 million as of 2008. Her work has earned her, among other things, an Academy Award nomination and she is known for performing in ten different languages during her career thus far. Enya is an approximate transcription of how Eithne is pronounced in her native Irish, in the Donegal dialect.

Keiko Matsui's last album, 2000s Whisper From the Mirror, was picked up and reissued by the Narada label in 2001, and Narada is also releasing her 12th album, . It's an appropriate match-up for the Japanese pianist, since Narada is known primarily as a new age label, and, though her records are being released on its Narada Jazz imprint, "new age" is actually the best category to place her in. From the start of her career, Matsui has been shelved under "jazz," but that has always been more a marketing ploy than anything else, and never more so than on Deep Blue. Her compositions are melodic tunes, many of which sound like songs without lyrics, while others seem like soundtrack excerpts from a film not yet made. Matsui does solo within the tunes on occasion, but her improvisations -- if that is even what they are -- tend to explore further melodic developments rather than really take off. And the supporting instruments are just that -- percussion, string, and keyboard elements that support the composition. The music is said to be inspired by North Africa and the Mediterranean, another clue to its real intent. Jazz musicians rarely bother to make such extra-musical programming remarks, while classical, soundtrack, and new age composers do it all the time. As usual with Matsui's recordings, is attractive and engaging, and the bright pianism is consistently pleasing in its expression of flowing melodies. That it doesn't really belong in the category to which Matsui has somehow been assigned does nothing to diminish its appeal.

Matthew Lien (lee-ENN), a resident of Canada' Yukon Territory, has been composing, recording and producing music for most of his life. Singing traditional German and American folk songs as a child with his family, he graduated to the guitar and piano by the age of 10. With formal music lessons leaving him uninspired, he abandoned them after a few weeks and proceeded to teach himself piano and music theory, drawing inspiration and knowledge from friends and family.

Matthew draws considerable inspiration from the natural world. In an effort to create a moving and inspiring experience for live audiences, and out of a strong desire to raise awareness about endangered wilderness, Matthew and renowned photographer and white-water paddler Ken Madsen developed the Yukon Wildlands Project. The pair have traveled rivers of the Yukon, British Columbia, Northwest Territories and Alaska, coordinating other musicians and artists in an effort to interpret these areas through music, visual images and sound design. Matthew has recorded peregrine falcons attacking grizzly bears, calving glaciers, squeaking furry picas, rolling icebergs and much more. Edited into six-channel surround sound, the material is then woven into original music composition and set ablaze in thrilling live performances with stunning photographic projection, dramatic sets and lighting design

The latest and most ambitious of these collaborations between Madsen and Lien is the Caribou Commons Project, which has grown into a coalition of environmental and aboriginal representatives dedicated to the protection of Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and the Canadian range of the Porcupine River caribou herd which calve in the Arctic Refuge each year. The Caribou Commons Project has completed several international efforts including a live concert tour which crossed Canada and the United States (including such renowned venues as the Fitzgerald Theater in St. Paul, Minnesota, and the Canadian Embassy in Washington, D.C.), as well as smaller multimedia presentations throughout North America. More recently, the "Walk To Washington, D.C. for the Arctic Refuge" completed a self-propelled journey of several thousand miles across the United States, with performances and events along the route climaxing at Capitol Hill in the United States.

The Caribou Commons Project continues to draw attention to the threat of oil and gas development in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and the sensitive calving grounds of the Porcupine River caribou herd, and Matthew is currently at work on a new CD entitled "Arctic Refuge," dedicated to this issue.
